Osoyoos is the border town at the south end of the Okanagan, where sage and antelope-brush desert runs down to Osoyoos Lake and vineyards fill the benches in between. This weekend is built for two: desert trails and Syilx culture, a couples massage, long winery lunches and dinner facing the water. Day 1 stays close to town; Day 2 follows the lake north to Oliver.
Day 1: Desert trails, a winery lunch and dinner on the lake
On the drive in. Arriving on Highway 3 from the west, pull over for Spotted Lake northwest of town. Called Ktlil'x in the Okanagan language, it is a sacred Syilx site maintained by the Osoyoos Indian Band. Minerals from the surrounding hills gather into spots that can turn blue, green, yellow or purple. View it from the roadside on Highway 3; the lake itself is sacred ground.
Morning. At the Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre on Rancher Creek Road, the Osoyoos Indian Band looks after 1,600 acres of desert conservation land. Walk the sage trails to the Chief's Lookout, go through a reconstructed village and meet a Western Rattlesnake eye to eye. Two multi-sensory theatres tell the legends of Sen'klip, the Coyote. Water, a hat and comfortable shoes are essential.
Lunch. Down the same road, Nk'Mip Cellars is the first Indigenous-owned and -operated winery in North America. Its restaurant, Sweetgrass, serves lunch on a patio that looks out over the lake and hills from spring through fall, then moves indoors to the Knowledge Keepers Lounge for winter. At the tasting bar, order the Qwam Qwmt flight, the reserve tier; the name translates to "achieving excellence."
Afternoon. Up on the Osoyoos East Bench, Moon Curser Vineyards makes wine from old-world grapes nobody had planted in the Okanagan before: Touriga Nacional, Carménère, Tempranillo. The tasting is five wines with the vineyard and Osoyoos Lake in view, and no reservation is needed. The name is a nod to the town's gold-smuggling past.
Late afternoon. Back on Rancher Creek Road, Solterra Desert Spa builds its treatments from the desert around it. Take the couples massage, or pair a Desert Stone massage with the Desert Sacred Mud Wrap.
Dinner. At Walnut Beach Resort, Pointe 49 Kitchen & Bar serves dinner in the dining room or on a patio facing Osoyoos Lake. Go for sunset. The resort has a private beach and a lakefront heated pool with hot tubs, which makes it an easy place to stay the night.
Day 2: A morning on the lake, then the wine road to Oliver
Morning, on the water. Lakefront Marina on Main Street rents pontoon boats, kayaks, paddleboards and water bikes on Osoyoos Lake. Its wine boat tour opens with a one-hour cruise across the lake before stopping at wineries.
Or on foot. sẁiẁs Park, called Haynes Point until 2015, reaches into the lake 2 km south of town. The name means a place where the lake is shallow or narrow in the middle, and people once crossed there on foot or on horseback. Walk the marsh interpretive trail. Around the sandbar at the tip, the bottom drops away steeply.
On the way north. Three kilometres up Highway 97, the Osoyoos Desert Centre runs a 1.5 km elevated boardwalk through antelope-brush, one of Canada's most endangered habitats. It opens from May through early October.
Late morning. A short way north on Osoyoos Lake, La Stella Winery names its wines after Italian musical notes: Allegretto, Vivace, Maestoso. Tastings are seated and outdoors, by appointment made online, and there is a picnic area for your own snacks alongside a flight.
Lunch. Off Black Sage Road in Oliver, Burrowing Owl Estate Winery farms a 140-acre vineyard on a sandy plateau near the north end of Osoyoos Lake, at the northern tip of the antelope-brush ecosystem. The Sonora Room, its fine-dining restaurant, serves lunch and dinner; indoor tables take reservations and the patio is first come. For a second night, the adults-only Guest House has rooms with fireplaces and private decks above the vines, a 25-metre pool and breakfast included.
Afternoon. Also on Black Sage Road, Phantom Creek Estates farms vineyards certified organic by Ecocert since 2021. The seated tasting pours five estate-grown wines, indoors or outside with panoramic views. The Estate Tour & Tasting adds a 45-minute guided walk through the winery first.
Good to know
- Come between May and October. The Osoyoos Desert Centre opens May through early October, Moon Curser pours from April to the start of November, and the Sonora Room closes for winter at the end of November.
- Dress for the desert. Water, a hat and comfortable shoes on every trail and boardwalk.
- See what's on before you go. Winery dinners and pairings change with the season. Here's this weekend.
Further up the valley: a weekend in Summerland.
